| The Dolichoderinae subfamily contains some of the most commonly seen ants in the Noosa area, such as Meat Ants and Spider Ants. These ants are general predators and scavengers and some tend Hemiptera (hoppers), providing protection in exchange for the honeydew secreted by the bugs. Dolichoderinae lack stings, instead employing their strong mandibles and formic acid as a means of attack and defence. Nests can be found in a variety of locations - in soil, logs and amongst rocks. The colonies can be huge, with populations numbering in the thousands. |
