| Formicinae contains some of the most common ants in the area, being found foraging in most habitats day and night. They are generally scavengers, although they will tackle live prey from time to time. The most commonly seen species in this region are the Golden Spiny Ants and Sugar Ants. Golden Spiny Ants can be seen tending Plant Hopper nymphs, protecting them from predators in exchange for the hoppers' secreted honeydew. Their nests vary in size and shape and they contain colonies from hundreds to thousands of workers. When disturbed, these ants will put up a strong defence, spraying the intruders with formic acid (like Dolichoderinae, they lack a sting). |
