Myrmeciinae

If you want aggressive ants, then Myrmeciinae is the subfamily for you. Amongst this lot are some of the most well-known species, such as the Bullant (also known as Bulldog Ant) and Jumper Ant (also known as Jumping Jack or Jack Jumper).

These ants have very good eyesight and they will actively pursue prey or whoever is foolish enough to disturb their nest. I can tell you from personal experience that their sting is very painful. Some species have been known to cause death amongst people unfortunate enough to suffer a severe allergic reaction.

Myrmeciinae generally nest in soil and the colony can contain a few hundred to a few thousand workers. They are very active during the day and sometimes at night, foraging on the ground or amongst low vegetation. Their speed and the ability of some species to make short jumps means they are able to overtake most insects, which they overpower with their strong, elongated mandibles and their powerful sting.
