| The ants belonging to Myrmicinae make up the largest and one of the most diverse subfamilies in Australia. They can be as small as 1 mm long to as large as 10 mm and their body shapes can vary greatly from species to species. The nests can be found anywhere - in the soil, in fallen logs and dead trees, or high in the branches of living trees. Colonies can consist of as few as 50 individuals to as many as several thousand. Some species are predators, while others are seed gatherers. The most distinctive species I have come across is the Muscleman Tree Ant. Its distinguishing feature is its "muscular" legs. |
